Empowering Female Filmmakers: Netflix and AFAC Launch Innovative Training Program in the MENA Region

Netflix and the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) are setting the stage for a new generation of female filmmakers through their pioneering "Women in Film: Introduction to the Creative Process" training program. Designed to empower and educate, this initiative will welcome 45 women from across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, and Egypt, offering them a unique opportunity to dive deep into the world of filmmaking.

This bespoke program targets recent female graduates with a passion for filmmaking, providing them with an immersive experience into the realm of creative cinema. Through a series of workshops, these budding filmmakers will gain invaluable insights into scriptwriting, direction, and the overall creative journey, mentored by some of the most respected female voices in the Arab film industry.

Nuha el Tayeb, Netflix's Director of Content for the Middle East, Africa, and Turkey, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the importance of fostering female talent and ensuring their stories are heard and seen, both in front of and behind the camera.

Echoing this sentiment, Rima Mismar, the Executive Director at AFAC, shared her pride in the long-standing commitment to promoting diverse and bold creative expressions. This partnership with Netflix not only continues this tradition but also amplifies the support for emerging female talents, offering them the tools and platform to challenge the norms and make their mark in the film industry.

Interested candidates, aged 21 to 27, are invited to apply through the AFAC website starting August 17, with a closing date for applications on September 8. A panel of experts will review the submissions, with successful applicants being announced by October 17.

This collaboration between Netflix and AFAC under the banner of Netflix’s Fund for Creative Equity represents a significant step towards nurturing a vibrant and inclusive filmmaking community in the Arab world, promising a brighter future for women in cinema.
