Quality Time for Duke Energy with ViaLite GPS Links

Energy firms must ensure the reliability of their crucial IT systems and networks, which require highly accurate timing and synchronisation signals. To address this, Duke Energy has employed fibre optic links from ViaLite for distributing GPS-derived timing signals.

ViaLite's cutting-edge RF over fibre technology showcased at the CABSAT exhibition allows the transmission of signals across vast distances to remote locations, eliminating the signal loss typical with coaxial cables. The GNSS/GPS links are compatible with a variety of international GPS and timing signal standards and are designed to be exceptionally low noise, crucial for enhancing the reception of often weak GPS signals at the rooftop antenna.

The installation at Duke Energy features three 1U rack chassis units, each capable of hosting three card slots, thereby supporting up to six channels per rack. This setup, including the supplied GPS Link Tx and Rx chassis cards, is effective for distances ranging from 1 metre to 50 kilometres.

Craig Somach, ViaLite Director of Sales, commends the company's consistent delivery of high-quality, reliable electro-optical devices. Duke Energy praises the equipment for its flawless functionality and ease of deployment, highlighting the simplicity of its plug-and-play setup.

Duke Energy, headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., stands as one of America's leading energy companies, serving 8.2 million customers across North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. The company employs 28,000 individuals and owns 50,000 megawatts of energy capacity.

According to Duke Energy: “ViaLite’s equipment worked perfectly as designed, and was very easy to deploy thanks to its plug and play installation.”
